A scarecrow trail turns a familiar village or school into somewhere to explore. There might be a straw-haired gardener beside the village hall, a storybook character in a shop window or a whole scarecrow family waiting around the next corner. A clear map helps visitors find them all and enjoy the little details along the way.

In this guide, we’ll use Pathyn’s scarecrow theme to turn a set of display locations into a map with numbered stops, and a few autumn decorations. You can follow the same steps for a village event, a school trail or a PTA fundraiser.

In our previous post, we showed detailed examples on how to make a treasure map with Pathyn. This post is a brief guide with ideas on how to get started on a community scarecrow trail event. A scarecrow trail gives people a reason to explore their village, admire their neighbours’ creativity and spend an afternoon outdoors. Residents, schools or local businesses make scarecrows, and visitors follow a map to find them. You can add clues, a favourite-scarecrow vote or fundraising activities, but a small trail can work with just a handful of displays and clear directions.

A scarecrow trail can bring together classroom creativity, an autumn walk and a school community celebration. Each display gives families something to find, while a map helps them explore at their own pace.

You do not need dozens of scarecrows or a packed programme. For a first event, one display per class, a short trail and a simple activity sheet can be plenty. Choose one main idea from the suggestions below, then add an extra activity only if your team has the time to run it.
